n игра, партия, матч (1). Русскому существительному игра соответствуют английские существительные game и play. Game обозначает игру по определенным правилам и предусматривает некоторые знания и умение:

a game of tennis (of chess) — партия (игры) в теннис (в шахматы),

to be good at all ball games — хорошо играть во все игры с мячом.

Football is a quick game — Футбол — игра, идущая в быстром темпе.

Play обозначает любое развлечение:

children's plays — детские игры;

to see smb at work and at play — видеть кого-либо за работой и за развлечением.

Существительное play в этом значении неисчисляемое и употребляется без артикля. (2). See play, v.
